LOTTI VAN DER GAAG
Van der Gaag started sculpting in the 1940s at the insistence of her then partner, the painter Bram Bogart.
She took classes at the Royal Academy of Art and at the Vrije Academie in The Hague.
In 1950 she left for Paris and came into contact with members of the Cobra movement, including Karel Appel and Corneille. However, Corneille did not want Lotti to become a member of the movement and that is why Van der Gaag never took part in a joint exhibition. She was strongly influenced by Cobra in her work, especially when it came to her fantasy figures.
In 1951 she took lessons in the studio of Ossip Zadkine and a year later her work was shown in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1958 Lotti van der Gaag received the Jacob Maris Prize.
From 1974 she also started painting; and fantasy figures continued to predominate in these works as well.
Lotti died in 1999.
