Description
THIS BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK HAS BEEN SOLD!
Lithograph by Karel Appel.
Published in year 1958.
Edition number ** of 50 (very low edition)
Signed by the artist right under.
Numbered on the left’ **/50
Price on request.
Condition:
Litho done on very thick paper. Like many of Karel Appel’s works at that time, the back was considered ‘less important’. The back therefore shows signs of little attention, as many works from that time unfortunately. But fortunately this is not visible on the front of the work.
Edges are very slightly wavy, but if this work is placed in a frame again without a passe-partout, the glass corrects everything again.
And this is probably also the most beautiful because of the ‘rough edges’. But for a work that is 60 years old the condition is good and framed you have a really beautiful composition with this Karel Appel. Please also read the text ‘Information’ below!
Image area: 74 x 54,5 cm.
Sheet dimensions: 75 x 56 cm.
Information:
I have only come across this work a few times. Also not strange because of the very low edition of 50 pieces. The best thing is always taking the work out of the frame. Came from a 1970s frame. Work had probably come loose because it had been taped (badly) again. I suspect this was done when they decided to sell work. But then the surprise came out 🙂
During my search for the name of this work I came across a few sales in the past where work was offered under the title ‘Composition’ or ‘Untitled’. And if you after that, remove a work from the list, then of course you only hope for 1 thing; that something comes up…. And yes; there were 2 ‘notes’ at the back; see photos below:
Probably the title of this work is ‘HEADS ALL OVER’. And ‘Look you will see’ as a subtitle.
However, if I search for Heads all over’ by Karel Appel, I come across 1 other work from the same year, same edition but different composition. So it could indeed have been a series under ‘Heads all over’ with subtitles.
Do you have info; please let us know. We like to learn 🙂
And yes; the person who pulled off the suspected tape should go to ‘culture lesson’ :(.
But fortunately it is not visible on the front.
In addition, there was the following on the back, but we are still investigating it further.
So nice info on the back.

KAREL APPEL
Karel Appel, born April 25, 1921, was one of the most important painters of the post-war era in the Netherlands. Known for his colorful personality and for his fluid, spontaneous approach to his paintings. He believed in an entirely unskilled form of creative expression. And looked for inspiration to the art produced by children and artists who worked outside the canon (folk artists).
As a founding member of the CoBrA group, Karel Appel, together with his Dutch compatriots Corneille Guillaume Beverloo and Constant Nieuwenhuys, he developed a radically new approach to painting. In 1949 Cobra was given an exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The exhibition was received very negatively. Disappointed, Appel settled in Paris in 1950. Karel Appel’s international breakthrough started around 1953 when his work was shown at the SĂŁo Paulo Biennale. In 1954 there were solo exhibitions by Appel in Paris and New York, and in 1968 there finally was a solo exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
Around 1990 Appel had four studios, in Monaco, New York, Connecticut and Mercatale Valdarno (Tuscany). He mainly used his studio in New York to experiment with his painting. And he worked out these experiments from New York in his other studios there. Works with the same theme then got, for example, their own character through a different light in Tuscany.
Karel Appel died on May 3, 2006 and was buried privately at the cemetery of Père-Lachaise in Paris.
